Barbara Heyer can hear voices of dead people. They whisper of their deaths, seek comfort for those left behind, and occasionally even warn her about future events. But when Barbara’s brother, Colin, is accused of murder, it will take more than her gift to prove his innocence.

Becoming smitten with the handsome investigator, Detective Patrick Fischer, is a serious complication given his assignment to her brother’s case. Barbara senses there is something far deeper—and perhaps much older—than the surface attraction between them. Could that be why she’s visited by a mysterious woman named Emma in her dreams? Could past life regression tie all the seemingly unconnected events together?

Barbara and Patrick must overcome heartache to find the truth to save Colin, and perhaps themselves.

Till Life Do Us Part edition by Carmen Stefanescu Romance eBooks

Till Life Do Us Part by Carmen Stephanescu starts out with the protagonist, retired nurse Barbara, painting flowers. It is a gift from a husband to his wife who is depressed over the loss of their son. The same son who delivers a message to Barbara from the beyond to give to his parents when she delivers the painting. The writing is rich with imagery flowing from the pages as the intriguing storyline unfolds with scenes and believable dialogue that moves the story along at a good clip. Barbara delivers the painting to the couple and tells when the message from their son, which is very believable. When she leaves there she receives an image (a spiritual message) that someone named Kathleen has been murdered. This woman happens to be Barbara’s brother Colin’s girlfriend. It is here that the plot turns into a metaphysical meets murder mystery plot and what I love about this author is that it all works. I’m reading and envisioning my own deceased family members finding a way to communicate with me and trust me I’m not a true-believer in much of anything. But hey, who knows what’s possible, that’s how good the writing is.
Barbara’s history of clairaudience goes back to when she was 10 years old and by the time our story takes place she has it well cultivated in scenes where she is receiving messages, while hugging her terrier dog, Jack (I love this dog character and their relationship). Other characters are introduced to give the story depth: Tom, the misfit rebel older brother of Kathleen, the lusciously handsome detective Patrick who investigates the murder case in which Colin is the prime suspect, his best friend and partner, and the mystery stalker who lurks in the night, among others. A scene I particularly enjoyed was the one in which Barbara revealed her clairvoyance abilities to the detective who sadly was wearing a wedding band. Alas, not sad because the message Barbara received was from his dead wife. The mysterious jasmine aroma she tells him about cinches the doubt he has in her. I know that there are psychics that work with police to solve murder mysteries here in the U.S. and I’m sure it’s not a novel idea around the world. This lends great credence to the relationship that develops between Barbara and our handsome detective. Layer upon layer of side stories and spiritual communications along with dreams—like the one in which Barbara dreams she’s another woman named Emma who is burned at the stake—give depth to the story.
The story continues as does the intrigue: Colin leaves town making him appear guilty even though he’s not arrested, another psychic Amanda goes with Patrick over to Barbara’s; and missing diamonds used by the police in a drug trade scheme. There is certainly no lack of excitement or new events that propel the story forward as we learn from another spirit visit to Barbara that a policeman’s recent death was a murder and there’s a traitor in the department. When a mysterious box is found under the floorboard that has a weird jelly like substance in it Barbara touches it and faints.
A couple of weeks later, she’s recuperating with Amanda in her garden helping her. Patrick had also been by her side during her recovery. More novel scenes move into the story as it progresses: a voodoo doll, a pendulum, past life regressions and an intimate betrayal is revealed, a mysterious death of Kathleen’s parents, Kathleen’s deadbeat brother vanishes, and the fascinating history of Barbara’s house is told.
Time moves forward for years, Barbara is 27, and still mistrusts men due to the past betrayal but she admits to Amanda she’s in love with Patrick. Kathleen’s case is still unsolved when Patrick brings another old cold case to Barbara, which she solves. As he’s leaving he plants a soft kiss on her lips. Without retelling the entire story that continues along with no lack of action, suffice it to say this was a great read that I thoroughly enjoyed. Read and find out for yourself who Kathleen’s murderer is, do Patrick and Barbara get together, who is the traitor in the police force, and are any other mysteries unraveled through Barbara’s psychic talents. Kudos to the very talented Carmen Stephanescu for this packed full exciting read.

Till Life Do Us Part edition by Carmen Stefanescu Romance eBooks Reviews

This book came to me unexpectedly but I am glad I got a chance to read something by this author. Carmen Stefanescu is a new-to-me author, but if her other books are as well written as this one, I will be seeking out more of her work. The idea of reincarnation has always been of great interest to me, I actually believe in it completely. When you tie in the element of murder, I'm completely sold. I love murder mystery. Barbara is a great character. For me, she really comes off the page. Her journey in this book really interested me. You may think that all these elements would add up to a horror novel, but actually, it's more like a cozy mystery. No gore, no horror, nothing that would keep you up at night. Though the main character gets messages from beyond the grave, the author did a great job making this a book for anyone. You don't have to keep all the lights on for this one. I really love how the characters grow, and how the process of discovering if Colin really did murder his girlfriend unfolds. Nothing is exactly easy, but we really get to learn a lot about what happened. Highly recommend this book! Very engaging, and something different!

Till Life Do Us Part held my interest from beginning to end. You can tell this author has seriously researched many aspects of the paranormal and seamlessly woven them into this tale. Kudos, Ms. Stefanescu.
If you haven't read Till Life Do Us Part, trust me you're in for a great ride. The author has the unique ability to bring topics such as reincarnation and gifts such as psychic abilities into a format where the reader can clearly understand them and see their reality in the world of the story. Speaking of the latter, the author is a wonderful storyteller, filling the pages with complex characters with difficult pasts. The characters tug at our heart, and we are with them every step of the way as they seek their life goals.
