“Little Forest is the only place I've ever lived, and it's the place where I'm going to die. Tonight.” These are the words of Beth Powers, long-time resident of Little Forest. On the surface, she’s just an ordinary English girl in a typical English village, but appearances can be deceiving… extremely deceiving.

There’s something lurking beneath the picturesque façade of the English village of Little Forest, something dark and disconcerting, something which the vast majority of the residents are refusing to see…

Fed up with living in the tiny, gossip-fuelled village, twenty-one year old Beth resolves to escape to London with her best friend, Veronica Summers. That is, until something throws a spanner in the works. A rather large spanner. A dead body, to be exact. A dead body found early one morning in the spooky surroundings of the Great Specton Woods.

The apparently accidental death of Beth’s work colleague sets off the small community’s well-oiled rumour mill, and Beth soon finds herself in the middle of a bizarre village conspiracy. Potential suspects start appearing in all shapes and sizes – including the handsome new resident, mystery man Connor Maguire, who has conveniently just arrived in Little Forest – and with the police refusing to consider murder, Beth takes it upon herself to investigate. At least it’s a good distraction from the other strange and unusual things that have started happening in her generally boring life; let’s just say that Beth’s work colleague isn’t the only dead person she has to deal with these days. After all, it isn’t always something as innocent as the ghosts of past memories that come to get you…

With the help of rather unlikely ally Will Wolseley, Beth delves into the village’s sinister secrets and, in turn, uncovers a terrifying truth about herself that could change her life forever.

Unfortunately, she might not have much of ‘forever’ left, as when it comes right down to it, it’s not a question of whether or not she’ll decide to leave her childhood home. The question is whether or not Little Forest will let her go.

The Former World is reminiscent of a good old-fashioned English mystery thriller, updated to the twenty-first Century but still relying on the quaint locations of the beautiful English countryside close-knit villages, local pubs, ancient castles, large, looming forests and magnificent Stately homes. This enchanting rural environment gives Beth the perfect setting to explore the ominous events that threaten to shake up her small village and her life.

The Former World A Little Forest Paranormal Mystery Book 1 eBook Jessica Grace Coleman

When I started reading this book, I was sure I would only be giving it two stars. It's excellently written, beautiful language, great style, a good voice ... but it just failed to reach me at an emotional level. The only thing I could think was this is clearly written for a young adult audience. It read like "Twilight" (though like I said, a much better writing style) and I kept picturing the cast of "Pretty Little Liars" as the character. These people are supposed to be 21, yet they acted at least five years younger to me. Never have I felt too old for a book. No way was I going to read the sequels.

Yet somehow, in the final chapter, things changed. Finally some quotes rang true for me, and I found myself on the edge of my seat as well as intrigued for more. There was no question whatsoever, even from the start, that Jessica Grace Coleman can write, but now she has also made me curious, if only for the mythology behind her stories. I'm still not too thrilled about the characters, but hey, as in real life, you can't like everybody.

And that's why, in the end, she gets my three stars.

The Former World A Little Forest Paranormal Mystery Book 1 eBook Jessica Grace Coleman Reviews

I was immediately drawn into this story. The writing is wonderful and the characters are fully fleshed out. Beth is a truly likeable protagonist. I loved all of the secondary characters as well and wanted to learn so much more about all of them. Guess it's a good thing there are more books featuring this creepy little town. I love a good mystery story that keeps me thinking and The Former World was exactly what I was looking for. It had just enough creep factor. I didn't give it a higher rating due to a few mistakes within the book and there were a couple things in the book left unresolved that are still bugging me. Over all it was an enjoyable read and I'll eventually read the others in the series.
True to its promise, this was a cozy little read (with a dash of the paranormal thrown in). I quite liked it. It was well-written, well-edited, and had believable characters. Add in a dash of mystery, some danger, and that small-town feeling and you've got a lovely book to curl up with. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go start reading the second book in the series. ;)
The Former World is such a unique and engaging book. Combining mystery, suspense, and the paranormal, along with an engaging plot and well fleshed out characters.

The main character Beth is the average small town girl, wanting to get away and go on to bigger and better places. Her escape is all planned but ends up never happening due to some unforeseen circumstances. However, the small town of Little Forest is much more interesting than Beth ever imagined. So much so that she might not survive what lies just under the surface of the town.

Can't wait for the next installment!
The story comes out as a stream-of-consciousness narrative, an admittedly eventful month or two in the life of the lead character and a smallish circle of friends and acquaintances. Kind of a study in how people might react and change when confronted with indications of the supernatural. Not a cliffhanger, but unresolved inter-character relationships leading to follow-on stories.

Not good enough that I'd buy the sequel(s)... but I'd maybe read them through Unlimited.
This is the start of a series. This first one lets us meet the characters. I wasn't sure if I would like it, but I was soon very interested in what was going on and the stories of the characters. And very curious as to what will happen in the next book. i was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
Wow, this was good. I figured it would be an easy to put down read, and I would probably not continue the series. I was wrong. I read it in one sitting and went on to the next one without even stopping. I was immediately caught up in a vividly portrayed world full of murder, mayhem, love, and yes, ghosts. But the ghosts were actually not the primary objective of the story, it was the relationships among the living that kept me reading. Good job!
i keep wanting to like this book. The writing is fairly good and I think there's a plot in here somewhere but i'm over 1/2 and still don't know what's going on - just a lot of teasers that something will finally be revealed to make it make sense. I almost never put down a book without finishing it but I may have to with this one. It's so frustrating to keep coming back for the story and have it not progress, just more teasers. Hopefully there will be some sort of culmination that will make it all worth reading, but i'm about to give up on the effort. If I don't come back and change this review it means it never got better. Too bad, because it could've been good if the writer hadn't tried so hard to be mysterious that she lost my interest after the 10th teaser.
